No network in the basement: what offline capability really means

Caching is not enough. What matters in software for technicians.

5 min read

In the boiler room, the elevator shaft or the underground car park, the network is often gone. For field service software this is not an exception but everyday life. Still, many apps treat offline mode as a stopgap that merely caches data.

Offline means: all the work functions

  • Equipment file and history are on the device, not just today's list
  • Guided workflows such as fault tree and inspection report run without a connection
  • Photos, readings and signature are saved and transmitted later
  • Conflicts are detected when two people work on the same unit
Fault tree. Manufacturer know-how on site, even without a network.
Report with signature. The report is created from the job and signed on site.

How to recognize it in a test

Deliberately switch off the network during the pilot and work through a complete job, including report and signature. Only if everything then arrives without rework is the software truly offline-capable.
